DOK — 55th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film took place in Leipzig, Germany from October 29 to November 1, 2012. Over its more than half a century existence, the festival has grown to truly impressive dimensions and the number of overlapping programs and sections forces the FIPRESCI Jury to focus only on the main competition of documentary films. Besides the official competitive sections of documentary and animated films, the festival presented a wide array of retrospectives, special screenings, etc., ranging from the early films of Wladyslaw Starewicz, to the avant-garde movies by the famous New York underground artist Barbara Hammer, to new documentary and animated productions from Latin America. The festival is also an important platform for professional discussions and industry meetings. DOK 2012 was, as in previous years, well attended by filmmakers from all over the world as well as young cinephiles who sometimes had to stand in long lines in order to get tickets for screenings.
