Berlinale 2018, Forum: “An Elephant Sitting Still” by Hu Bo (1988-2017)
Berlinale 2018. Our jury awarded the Critics Prize to the first and last film by Chinsese director Hu Bo, “An Elephant Sitting Still” (China, 2017, 230 min, shown in the International Forum of New Cinema). Motivation: “It’s a day trip of four characters, supported by a convincing cast, that visualizes the inner emotional challenges of individuals living in China’s modern society. Following his protagonists with big empathy the director tries to show different ways to cope with indifference, negligence, rejection and violence.” Hu Bo had taken his life in October 2017, at the age of 29.
