In Memoriam Giorgio Gosetti

On March 6, Giorgio Gosetti suddenly left us. A distinguished film critic and journalist, he was a proud longtime member of FIPRESCI and served on the FIPRESCI jury at the Istanbul Film Festival in 2009.

Born in Venice in 1956, he worked as a festival organizer at the Venice Film Festival under the direction of Gillo Pontecorvo, and later at the Rome Film Festival. He was also the founding General Delegate of Giornate degli Autori in Venice, Artistic Director of the Noir In Festival in Milan alongside Marina Fabbri, and Director of the Casa del Cinema in Rome.

A man of vast culture and a gifted polyglot, he was a true expert on cinema—an outstanding critic and essayist, a brilliant speaker, and a beloved university professor. Yet those who knew him will remember just as vividly for his personal qualities: his kindness, elegance, and generosity. Always diplomatic yet never complacent, he was unfailingly ready to offer a helping hand, thoughtful advice, a word of wisdom, or a professional opportunity—especially to younger colleagues.

He possessed the rare distinction of being a true aristocrat of spirit without ever becoming a snob. Until the very last day of his rich and prolific intellectual and artistic life, he preserved an undiminished curiosity for the world and for the people around him.
