Tsai Ming-liang Receives FIPRESCI 100 Lifetime Achievement Award in Venice
As part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration at Venice International Film Festival, film critics’ federation distinguished Tsai Ming-liang with FIPRESCI 100 Lifetime Achievement Award.

For years, international film critics have followed Tsai Ming-liang’s films at festivals and admired their pivotal role in cinema. FIPRESCI is proud to present the director with the “FIPRESCI 100 Lifetime Achievement Award” on the occasion of the of his beautiful film Aiqing Wansui (VIVE L’AMOUR) at its screening within Venezia Classici, during the course of the 82nd Mostra del Cinema.
We strongly believe that Tsai Ming-liang deserved this award on the occasion of the centenary of our Federation. His understanding of cinema as not simply entertainment and profit but as an Art form that needs proper time, care and meditation; his ability to reinvent and develop it to include the most advanced technologies without compromising its essence and soul; his freedom in defying restrictions and formulaic definitions made him the ideal artist to be celebrated by our Federation on its 100th birthday.
FIPRESCI, which has been founded in 1925, has over the years been presenting the FIPRESCI Prize to the best films shown at international film festivals, and has bestowed its award for Tsai Ming-liang’s Heliu (The River), Dong (The Hole) and Bu San (Goodbye Dragon Inn), singling out director’s talent in filmmaking, his realistic yet poetic take on world developments, and his mastery in visual narrative.
The “FIPRESCI 100 Lifetime Achievement Award” presentation was organized in a friendly cooperation with the Venice Film Festival, under the auspices of its esteemed Artistic Director Alberto Barbera.
