Stefanie Diekmann

Stefanie Diekmann is a full professor of media and film studies and head of the media studies department at Hildesheim University. As a visiting professor and lecturer she has taught, among others, at University College Cork (2005), The University of Texas at Austin (2006), Berne University (2007), Université de Louvain (2007, 2009, 2013, 2017), Université Paris 8 (2021 & 2022), and Aix-Marseille-Université (2023).
Her research is focused on theories of film and photography, intermedia relations, secondary characters, and the staging of interviews in documentary cinema. Her latest publications include the two monographies „Den König fallen lassen. Versuch über die Nebenfigur“ (Vienna 2026) and „Ein alter Film“ (Berlin 2026), and, as a co-editor, „Nebenfiguren“ (Berlin 2024, with Dennis Goettel), „Artist Meets Archive“ (2023, with Esther Ruelfs), and „Attraktion des Apparativen“ (Munich 2020, with Volker Wortmann).
As a part-time critic, she has written film and art reviews for the German weekly Der Freitag (2014 – 2019), and the German film magazine Cargo (2008 – 2017) and continues to write reviews for art magazine Texte zur Kunst (since 2002), the online magazine perlentaucher.de (since 2017), photo magazine Camera Austria (2024), and the occasional review for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, for example on the 14 hour documentary Exergue – on documenta 14 by Dimitris Athiridis.
