Jerusalem: A Chance for Debuts
At the 32nd Jerusalem Film Festival, the Critics Prize for a debut film in the international competition went to “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” by Chloe Zhao (USA). Motivation: “The film is a moving mixture between realism and lyricsm, that resonates like a ballad. It explores with tenderness and a humanistic sensibilty the social tension between modernity and tradition in the Native American reservation. It is remarkable in its cinematography and its use of music.”
A Special Mention went to “Wedding Doll” by Nitzan Giladi (Israel), “for the acting, the striking visual style and its outstanding and dramatic use of the Negev location”.
Jury members were Jack Mener, Belgium (“La Centrale”), Jose Luis Losa, Spain (“La Voz de Galicia”), Yair Raveh, Israel (“cinemascope”).
