Support Lisa Calan
We publish a letter in favor of the Turkish filmmaker Lisa Calan.
Dear Filmmaker,
We write to ask you to support young filmmaker Lisa Calan, who lost both of her legs in a bombing and hopes to continue to make films if she can get prosthetic limbs. Lisa inspires us with her wisdom and strong will.
On June 5, 2015 only two days before the general elections in Turkey, a bombing struck the rally for the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in the city of Diyarbakir. Among the hundreds of wounded was Lisa Calan, a filmmaker at the Middle East Cinema Academy. Lisa had both of her legs amputated after the bombing, in which two bombs packed with buckshot killed five and shattered the limbs of many.
Women filmmakers in Turkey have launched a solidarity campaign for Lisa. We are raising money to purchase prosthetic limbs for the victims of the attack in a campaign called “let’s be arms and legs to each other.”
We are sure that you are fully aware of the importance of solidarity in a tragic situation where lives of thousands of people are impacted. We hope to raise funds by the support of the generous donors. At the moment the campaign needs to collect at least 125.000 Euros, the cost of the prosthetic limbs for Lisa… Without continued donations from the international community this sum will not be raised and Lisa’s needs will likely go unmet.
We do hope that you will responde positively. Thank you for your consideration and support.
Warmest Regards,
Melek Özman
