FIPRESCI – Animation Call
Dear individual members and members of our national sections,
In the wake of our General Assembly and following up on exchanges we had with the Annecy Festival, it has been brought to the Board’s attention that animated cinema, as well as animation festivals, hadn’t been taken much seriously by FIPRESCI in the past years.
In 2025, animated cinema can no longer be considered “niche” or “children’s content”. Animated features such as Flee, Arco, The Siren or Flow have proven that the medium is limitless in what stories it can tell, and these productions are now showcased regularly in Cannes, Venice, and many other big events.
As of 2023, there were more than a hundred and fifty festivals dedicated to animation around the world, yet none had FIPRESCI juries.
To have FIPRESCI acknowledge that medium by establishing new jury collaborations, would feel like a legitimate move in the wake of this new era of the federation.
In that regard, Kévin Giraud, member of the Belgian section and a film critic specializing in the medium, has offered his services to the board as animation liaison. With the first goal of bringing a FIPRESCI jury back to the Annecy International Film Festival in 2026.
To strengthen this approach and potentially build other collaborations with major animation festivals, the FIPRESCI Board would like you to relay this open call for national members of your sections who are either partially or exclusively interested in the animated medium, be it short, feature, documentary, fiction or experimental.
National members are asked to reach out directly to Kévin Giraud (kgiraud@1030waysto.be) who will create a list of all names, contact and media info in order to further build this animation subgroup of FIPRESCI members.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation in relaying this information to all your members, and feel free to reach out should you have any questions.
