11th Jameson CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival

The 11th edition of Jameson CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival took place from 12–21 September at the cultural complex of the House of Arts in the centre of Miskolc, Hungary. This year the festival included 20 full-length feature films, 13 documentaries, 33 short feature films and experimental films, 19 animated movies in the competition program, including Damien Chazelle’s Sundance winner Whiplash and Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure (Turist); the latter has won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed in “Un Certain Regard”. This is the third time that a FIPRESCI jury is part of “the festival of young filmmakers”, and CineFest is the only event in Hungary where the International Federation of Film Critics is present. CineFest’s film history series — under the patronage of the Academy Award winning director István Szabó — celebrated its 5th anniversary this year. In the focus at CineClassics was one of the first Hungarian talkies, Dream Car (Meseautó, 1934), shot in Miskolc and starring the famous Hungarian actress Klári Tolnay (born 100 years ago); the renowned Hungarian cinematographer Sándor Sára (who turns 80 this year); and Orson Welles’ Hungarian “connection”. The master-class sessions continued; this year, two professionals (and jury members) gave lectures: Valdis Oskarsdottir, the BAFTA winning editor of Thomas Vinterberg’s Celebration and Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Alfredo Mayo, the cinematographer of Pedro Almodóvar. CineFest IFF traditionally organizes exhibitions, conferences, workshops, concerts and parties. (Judit Anna Molnár)
