Motivation: “The recipient of our award showed a strong directorial hand to elicit heartbreaking and truthful performances from their actors. The film presents an original perspective on a difficult subject while avoiding melodrama. And despite the suffering and guilt it powerfully puts on screen, it reaches for a hard-earned, luminous resolution. We feel privileged to be able to award this filmmaker early in what we hope is a long career”.
