Since 1990, the Festival, popularly known as Liff, which is the most important international film event in Slovenia, has devoted its program ea to idiosyncratic, contemporary and socio-political auteur cinema from Europe and around the world. Liffe offers a program with approximately 120 outstanding, hand-picked films, documentaries and short subjects and organizes retrospectives of important filmmakers and national cinemas, such as Aleksej German, David Cronenberg, Terence Davies, Leos Carax, Costa-Gavras or Yasuzo Masumura. In addition, many thematic retrospectives (on Technicolor, Road Movies, Metafilms, Italian political cinema etc.) found their place at the festival. This year’s retrospectives: complete Kelly Reichardt, hommage to Ukrainian classic Julia Solnceva and Hungarian experimental poet Zoltán Huszárik, a playful thematic nod to films that celebrate idleness and/or reluctance towards modern hyperprodction and workaholism, called Hallellujah, I’m a Bum. Amng thi edition’s highlights are a retrospective on the Commedia all’italiana of the 60’s and 70’s, and an homage to Bosnian director Ivica Matić (with all his films restored). The FIPRESCI jury will decide on a first or second film from the Perspectives section.
