Hanna Margolis

Film Critic, Poland

Hanna Margolis, PhD, is a film critic and a lecturer at the Department of Animated Film and Special Effects at the Łódź Film School in Poland, as well as an animation film director. Her research interests center on film through the lenses of gender studies and production studies, with a particular focus on contemporary digital production.

She is the author of Authors’ Animation in the People’s Republic of Poland, 1957–1968: The Hidden Project of Kazimierz Urbański (2019), and, as a kind of expiation for previously overlooking gender issues in animation studies, the book Invisible Hand: Women’s Animated Films in the (Male) Structures of Cinematography in Poland (2024). The latter offers a critical examination of both Polish and global animation history from the perspective of women working in the industry.
