Stefan Grissemann

Stefan Grissemann works as a film critic and journalist in Vienna, Austria. From 1989 to 2001, he was critic for the daily newspaper “Die Presse”. Since 2002 he serves as head of the arts section for “profil” news magazine. He regularly writes reviews and articles for books and catalogues, and works as a book editor. As an author, Grissemann pieced together the life and work of mythical B-picture director Edgar G. Ulmer in his 2003 biography “Man in the Shadows” and in 2007 he published a book on the provocative works of Austrian filmmaker Ulrich Seidl, which was updated in a second edition in 2013. Together with Brigitta Burger-Utzer he also edited the first comprehensive assessment of the cinematic work of artist Robert Frank in 2003 (“frank films” was re-issued in a revised and updated edition in 2009), together with Regina Schlagnitweit and Alexander Horwath he published an extensive catalogue on Peter Kubelka’s weekly avant-garde film series in the Austrian Filmmuseum in 2010. As an editor Grissemann also supervised production of the 2001 book “Haneke | Jelinek: The Piano Teacher”. He teaches journalism and regularly interviews cutting edge filmmakers such as Jonas Mekas, Claire Denis, Jia Zhangke, Todd Haynes, Peter Tscherkassky and Lars von Trier.
